Tool identification quiz

Real photographs, 10 seconds a tool, and wrong answers that are actually plausible. Name it before the clock runs out.

Why this is harder than most tool quizzes

Most tool quizzes are easy for a reason that has nothing to do with tools. They show you a wrench and offer you a wrench, a pair of tweezers, a vice and an angle grinder — so you can score full marks by ruling out three objects you would never confuse with anything, without ever looking at the tool in the photograph.

Here the three wrong answers are always members of the same family as the right one. An adjustable wrench is offered against a pipe wrench, a monkey wrench and a basin wrench. All four grip a fastener, all four are roughly the same shape at arm’s length, and the only way through is to look at the jaws: whether they sit parallel or angled, whether they are smooth or serrated, where the adjusting screw lives. That is the actual skill, and it is the one a quiz built from random wrong answers never touches.

The photographs are real too — workbenches, shop floors, parts in hands — rather than catalogue renders on white. A tool is easy to name in isolation under even lighting and much harder in a drawer with four others, which is where you will actually meet it.

Who uses this

Apprentices and trade students, who are expected to arrive knowing a vocabulary nobody formally taught them. Engineering students walking into a first workshop or a first placement. Mechanics, machinists and maintenance technicians keeping a working eye sharp. And makers and hobbyists who own the tool, use the tool, and could not swear to what it is called.

Common questions

What is a tool identification quiz?

A tool identification quiz shows you a picture of a hand or power tool and asks you to name it, usually as multiple choice. It measures recognition — whether you can put a name to a physical object on sight — which is a different skill from knowing what a tool does. Most people can describe what a pipe wrench is for and still fail to pick one out of a photograph of a workbench.

Where can I take a free tool identification quiz online?

Name This Part is free, runs in a browser, and needs no account or download. It shows a photograph of a real tool with one part singled out, gives you around ten seconds, and scores you on speed as well as accuracy. A round is about ninety seconds and you can play as many as you like.

What makes a tool quiz actually hard?

The wrong answers, not the picture. A quiz that offers a crescent wrench against tweezers, a vice and an angle grinder is answerable by elimination without ever looking at the tool. Offering it against a pipe wrench, a monkey wrench and a basin wrench forces you to read jaw geometry, which is the skill the quiz is supposed to be testing. Every question here is built the second way.

How many tools do I need to know?

For general shop competence, fluent recognition of perhaps thirty to fifty hand and power tools covers almost everything you will meet day to day. The harder part is the families where several members share a silhouette — wrenches, pliers, hammers, drill bits — because those are where confident people are confidently wrong.
