The short version
This is a game. Play it, enjoy it, argue with it, but please don’t rely on it for anything that actually matters. If we’ve got something wrong, tell us and we’ll fix it.
We can't promise the names are right
Every part here is named and checked by a person before it goes live, and we genuinely try to get it right. We can’t promise we always do, for a few honest reasons:
Names vary by trade, region and era. The same tool is an adjustable wrench, an adjustable spanner, a crescent wrench or a shifter depending on where you learned it. Manufacturers, standards bodies and the people who actually use the thing often disagree with each other.
A photograph shows one example. Naming a component from a single image is genuinely ambiguous sometimes, even for people who have handled thousands of them.
Some of it is contributed. Photographs come from Wikimedia Commons and from players, and the descriptions attached to them are not always correct either.
So the names, descriptions, categories and difficulty ratings on this site are offered as they are, with no warranty of accuracy, completeness or fitness for any particular purpose.
Please don't use this as a reference
Don’t rely on anything here to specify, select, order, install, inspect, repair or maintain a real component, and especially not anything load-bearing, pressure-retaining, safety-critical or regulated.
For real work, use the manufacturer’s own documentation, the applicable standard, or a qualified person. Nothing on this site is engineering advice, and it is not a substitute for either of those.
Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Name This Part provides this site on an “as is” and “as available” basis, disclaims all warranties whether express or implied (including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement) and accepts no liability for any loss or damage, whether direct, indirect, incidental, consequential or otherwise, arising out of your use of, or reliance on, anything published here.
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits any liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
What you send us
If you submit a photograph, you keep ownership of it. You’re confirming you took it or otherwise hold the rights to it, and giving us permission to use, edit and publish it here. We can decline or remove any submission at any time, for any reason, without explanation. Most rejections are simply about fit rather than anything being wrong.
Don’t submit anything showing a person’s face, a licence plate, an address, or anything else that identifies someone.
Accounts and email
Signing in — with Google or with a password — is optional. Depending on where you’re signing in from, it may also opt you in to occasional email about the game, on by default in most places and off by default where the law requires asking first. Exactly how that works, and how to change it, is covered in the privacy policy, not repeated here.
Accounts we can act on
We can suspend or terminate an account, or decline to create one, at our discretion — abuse of the leaderboard or the submission queue being the obvious case, but not the only one we’ll act on. We can also change, limit or discontinue any part of the site, temporarily or permanently, without it being a breach of these terms.
Spotted a mistake?
Genuinely, please tell us. There’s a report link on every question once you’ve answered it, which is the fastest route, since it comes through attached to the exact part you were looking at. Or email hello@namethispart.com. Corrections from people who know the trade are the single most useful thing anyone sends us.
Changes
We can update these terms as the site changes — a new feature, a new way of using the site, or the “Accounts we can act on” kind of housekeeping above are all reasons this might happen. A material change moves the date at the top; continuing to use the site after that counts as accepting it. These terms, together with the privacy policy, are the whole agreement between you and Name This Part about using the site — anything not written here or there isn’t part of it.
