Spiral Bevel Gear Set

HOW TO RECOGNISE IT
A spiral bevel gear set is identified by curved teeth cut onto two cones whose axes cross — a small pinion on its shaft driving a much larger ring gear at right angles to it. The curve is what separates it from a straight bevel gear: the teeth roll into mesh gradually along their length instead of landing all at once, which is why this is the arrangement used in a car's final drive.
