Forstner Bit

A Forstner Bit, photographed for identification practice

HOW TO RECOGNISE IT

A Forstner bit is identified by its rim of sharp outer teeth around a nearly flat cutting face with only a small center point for guidance. It cuts a clean, flat-bottomed hole even across the grain or at the edge of a workpiece, which a twist drill's pointed tip can't do.
